The Rise of English Wines

There was a day when English wines didn’t have the best reputation but these days with more than 500 vineyards across the UK and the increase in the quality of English wines, they are on the rise, and we for one are delighted! We try to source our products from local producers where we can and therefore have introduced a beautiful dry white wine produced by Three Choirs Vineyard on our wine list, as our House white.

Situated in the English countryside where the three counties of Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire converge, Three Choirs has become one of England’s most significant producers. As well as being the second largest wine estate in the country with around 100 acres under vine, Three Choirs is also one of the oldest, having pioneered the English wine movement in the 1970s when the industry was still in its infancy.

The farm, previously named Fairfield Fruit Farm, changed hands a few times, being initially owned by Alan McKechnie to finally get into the hands of Oldacre’s family. Over the years, the vineyard became prosperous, thus adding a few bedrooms and lodges for customers who wished to relax and enjoy the tastings around the vineyard.

In 2014, Three Choirs also became proud owners of their Wickham Vineyard, and started an extensive program of refurbishing the buildings and replanting areas of the vineyards. Situated in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, Three Choirs Hampshire spans an impressive 40 acres and has become a popular wedding location, with happy couples choosing to tie the knot nestled amongst the vines and gentle rolling hills of Wickham.

The Three Choirs “English House Dry”, our choice from theirs now multiple styles of wine, is crisp, clean and fruity: lemon, lime and pear make a refreshing mix. The grapes used are a mixture of Madeline Angevine, Reichensteiner and Seyval Blanc. Most vines are 10-20 years old and all grapes are hand-picked. The wine requires minimum intervention in the winery and it’s also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Take a challenge and uncover this wine, within the luxury and tranquillity of our hotel, accompanied by our delectable seasonal changing menu!
