A HIDDEN SECRET JUST WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED

ENVIRONMENTAL

ENVIRONMENTAL

At Berwick Lodge we try to combine comfort and high quality service with resilience and sustainability.

As a hotel we are aware that our actions have consequences on the environment and as a result we are acting to continuously improve our sustainability best practices throughout all our business activity.

Whilst we don’t claim to be completely free of environmental degradation, we know that even the smallest of actions can add up to big carbon savings. Whilst these small actions may be quick fixes we are constantly looking into those big carbon saving actions that make both economic and environmental sense.

We have assessed our key areas for improvements, these can be broken down into four categories.

Energy

  • Energy saving LED lights have been installed across the hotel
  • Computers automatically shut down after a certain time if they have been left on
  • Continual monitoring of our energy use through Energy-Deck in order to set targets to reducing our energy consumption.
  • Exploring options for generating our own power on site. We have explored a number of options to replace our fuel consumptive oil fed boiler and are hoping to find an alternative that suits Berwick lodge very soon.
  • Installed energy efficient grade A washing machines.
  • Fallen trees from our woodland are chopped up and stored in the log shed to season, for use in the hotel’s log burners and open fires.

Waste

  • Increased our recycling facilities on site
  • Recycle cooking oil to be turned into biodiesel
  • Reduce waste through re-use and recycling and by purchasing recycled or refurbished products and materials
  • Within our offices we use FSC approved printer paper
  • Monitoring our waste through EnergyDeck with the hope to see an increase in recycling and reusing of products to minimise our waste to landfill.

Food & Drink

  • We partner with Too Good To Go, providing 'Magic Bags' of surplus food, to fight food waste
  • Where possible, we source our products from local and sustainable suppliers.
  • We have assessed our suppliers and are aiming to use only those who share our environmental ethos. Whether this is using suppliers who are ISO 14001 accredited or those who are striving to be sustainable in a way that is viable for them.
  • Within our kitchen, all our fish is sustainably source whilst we source our meat from free range, local farms, including Berwick Lodge Farm next door

Guests

  • We have tried to encourage sustainable behaviours from our guests through green reminders in the room.
  • We are not preaching for our guests to save the environment, just giving out handy little tips that will make their stay more comfortable with the benefit of some Green goodness too.
  • Electric car charging points are available in the car park, chargeable at £25 per use.
  • Couples who hold their weddings with us are invited to plant a tree in our gardens, to offset some of the carbon footprint a wedding can create.

If you have any suggestions which may help us to further improve our green actions, we welcome them greatly. Just email info@berwicklodge.co.uk with the subject line ‘Green suggestion’
