Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II

Today is an incredibly sad day for all at Berwick Lodge as it is for countless people across the world. As we mourn this deep loss, our thoughts are with the Royal family.

The Queen was a diligent, steadfast and loving representative of her people. As the longest serving monarch, she was a constant in our lives and it is hard to picture the country without her as its ambassador. She embodied many of the qualities we all strive for and notwithstanding the weight of this loss, we continue to treasure her and draw inspiration from her legacy.

Robert, our Head Gardener, was fortunate enough to work on the grounds of Buckingham Palace as an Apprentice Gardener between 1975 and 1979 before working for King Charles the Third, the then Prince Charles, at Highgrove for some 9 years afterwards. To commemorate the Queen, Robert is going to create, in the grounds of Berwick Lodge, a Memorial Garden where guests can sit, reflect and enjoy nature.

In the spirit of reflection, her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, an incredible milestone, gave Berwick Lodge staff and customers an opportunity to celebrate the Queen, her life and service (with bunting, badminton and biscuits).

Whilst there is no gesture sufficient to thank the Queen for her lifelong servitude and commitment, we will be observing a period of mourning and reflection for the next 12 days. You will hear far less from us on social media, but our doors will remain open and we will continue to welcome guests.

Update Sep 18, 2022

In honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her funeral tomorrow, we have created our Memorial Garden at the front of our hotel.

Robert chose this particular shrub, a magnolia grandiflora, as it brings fond memories for him of the Royal Family. The plant was one of his favourite parts at Highgrove House, when he worked there in the gardens for 9 years.

The lovely board & image of the queen was also hand drawn by our lovely Rosie (Rosie Hunter Illustration. We hope this area will serve as a place to reflect and enjoy nature.
